The global management consulting firm PRTM analyzed the entries of more than 100 companies competing for the2009 European Supply Chain Excellence Awards and uncovered some interesting trends in current supply chain strategy and execution.

For instance, 77% of participants said the two most important strategic supply chain issues are “customer demand collaboration” and “supply chain risk minimization.”

In addition, PRTM found that:

  • Most participants are looking for supply chain innovation opportunities that will enhance market share. Companies want to better align customer needs with product development and improve supply chain strategies so that they can improve competitive advantage.
  • Other factors, such as “a focus on cost containment” (63 percent), “the increased role of technology” (52 percent), and “sustainability as a strategic differentiator” (36 percent), were also cited as important.
