CSCMP Report: Logistics Industry Shows Slow Economic Comeback

Business logistics costs last year were on par with 2005 and still well below the pre-recession years, according to the 22nd annual State of Logistics Report from the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.

Global Service Sector Shows Growth, Accelerating to 41-month High

The JPMorgan Global Services Business Activity Index shows that as 2010 ended, growth of US business activity accelerated sharply, rising to its fastest pace since August 2005.

What’s more, the US growth led a global upswing. Growth of both business activity and new work in the global service sector increased, and  the Index rose from 54.6 in November to 57.3 in December –the fastest rate of expansion since July 2007.

Boeing Predicts Return to Growth in Air Cargo Traffic

The Boeing World Air Cargo Forecast 2010/2011 predicts that world air cargo traffic will expand at a 5.9 percent annual rate over the next two decades, with worldwide air freight traffic expected to triple through 2029.

Released earlier this month, Boeing’s biennial report reveals that air cargo traffic rebounded strongly beginning in November 2009, and then continued on an upswing through the first eight months of 2010. As a result, Boeing predicts that world air cargo traffic will regain its 2007 peak by the end of this year.

CFOs Concerned About Double-Dip Recession

Unfortunately, it appears that fears of a double-dip recession are starting to paralyze fundamental business decisions regarding expansion, expenditures and hiring.

A new survey of 516 US Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) and senior comptrollers found that optimism about the economy is fading, and most believe that we won’t see a recovery until the second half of 2011 or later.

Aberdeen Group: Companies Turning to Supply Chains to Help Weather the Recession

Economic volatility has been the cause for the majority of supply chain disruptions over the past year and has led to unprecedented challenges in supply chain management, according to a new report from the Aberdeen Group.

The 24-page report, titled “The Supply Chain Executive’s Agenda 2009: Weathering the Recession,”  summarizes the results from a survey of more than 200 supply chain executives worldwide, provides insight about industry trends, and offers recommendations to combat the challenges of the global marketplace.
